Big Ideas in IPE That Matter: Visions, Myths, and Breakthroughs
Our collaborative work today stands upon the shoulders of visionaries from the past century who held big ideas, hopes, and dreams to change their status quo to make the world a better place for today’s generations and for our future. For the National Center, the past is becoming present and future while working with IPE Pioneer, Dr. Dewitt (Bud) Baldwin, to archive his collection of decades of interprofessional education and collaborative practice papers, reports and memories from his career. This University of Minnesota archival and preservation work is bringing alive Big Ideas of the past that turned into unexamined myths and ideologies about IPE, contributing to the well-documented cycles of bursts, booms, and busts for our field. With each passing generation of champions and lost history, IPE work has by necessity had to be resurrected and restarted with great effort by new generations of leaders through breakthroughs, seminal events, and progress.
Uncovering lost historical mysteries of Big Ideas and Myths is leading to many institutions representing at Nexus Summit 2021. Using documents from the past, Dr. Brandt will describe prescient Big Ideas at institutions of presenters and today’s IPE visionaries at Nexus Summit 2021. To continue and accelerate our current momentum in IPE, she will challenge us to engage in the healthy exercise of myth-busting to examine our current assumptions and beliefs. This reflection and reframing will set the tone for our Summit experience to learn from today’s visionaries with Big Ideas:
- New Visions for the Professions and Primary Care Transformation
- Getting real about how the people we care for are engaged as the focus for our work
- Courageous conversations about race and caste on the health care team
- Partnering with new allies in uncommon fields to reframe our thinking about research and evaluation in IPE
- Redefining how learning enhances care in interprofessional clinical environments
