Background: Many patients at the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry present with complex and often undiagnosed medical needs. Twenty-two percent report not visiting a primary care provider within 2 years and 55% have high blood pressure. Uncontrolled hypertension can create significant barriers to dental care, increasing the risk of poor oral-systemic health. To address this need, a student-led interprofessional health intervention in dentistry was created to provide at-…

Background. In many healthcare settings, teams change composition regularly, so healthcare students must be trained to function effectively in dynamic teams before entering the workforce. At our institution, learners from various health professions participate in varied scheduled clinics in low-income housing communities for older adults. While this is a longitudinal IPE experience for learners, program schedules vary so team composition is dynamic. These dynamic student teams meet with…

The Vanderbilt Maternal Addiction Recovery Program (VMARP) serves antepartum and postpartum women with substance use disorder, primarily opioid use disorder. Data collected from this clinic in 2021 suggests that these patients have low vaccination rates, with fewer than 50% of surveyed patients having received common vaccinations. VMARP patients consistently cited lack of knowledge…

For example, children of immigrants are more likely to live below the poverty line, be uninsured, and lack a permanent medical provider than non-immigrant children. In meeting pediatricians and other professionals who work with immigrant/refugee children at the 2020 Acute Care Research Unit Migrant and Refugee Child Health Conference, it…

Background: The Interprofessional Health Education (IPE) is expanding in Brazilian Health Higher Education despite the dominance of teaching for specific competences in each health profession. In order to strengthen IPE, it is necessary to include this approach in the courses’ curricula, with a clear intentionality about their theoretical-methodological precepts. Thus, we raise a question: which educational theories have been used in the IPE field?. The aim is to reflect how…
This project illustrates how we identified a patient, established a relationship with them, and assisted them in navigating the healthcare system. Using our JCIPE resources we reached out to EL, a patient with a significant medical history of ESRD, PTSD, and COPD whose daughter was her primary caregiver and liaison. During our time together, we targeted our efforts to increase compliance with patient dialysis appointments. We established a relationship with the patient by scheduling monthly…
