Background:Interprofessional team-based training (IPTT) can contribute to creating a more collaborative and practice-ready healthcare workforce. Designed by educators from diverse professions, our IPTT program aims to provide an introductory experience, centered on team-based care planning to improve patient health in the community setting. IPTT provides a clinically relevant opportunity for students from multiple professions to experience learning across four interprofessional (IP)…
Currently, students have few opportunities for interprofessional education (IPE) in the basic sciences, with related curricula largely carried out in school-specific silos. We hypothesized that basic anatomy education, exposure to IPE competencies and hand sensibility testing (HST) may require interprofessional collaboration from students in medical (MED), occupational therapy (OT), and physician assistant (PA) programs to improve patient outcomes in their future health profession careers.…
Background: The Quality Enhancement Plan at UT Health San Antonio, Linking Interprofessional Networks for Collaboration (LINC), serves as the institutional blueprint for transforming campus-wide interprofessional education (IPE). A key component of this plan includes cultivating knowledge and skills in faculty and staff to increase IPE opportunities for learners. The LINC Faculty and Staff Development Program was launched in Fall 2020 to achieve this goal. Design/Methodology:…
Interprofessional case competitions have been used nationally for many years to advance interprofessional education (IPE). The CLARION competition at the University of Minnesota serves as an exemplary model that has been adopted across the country. Such competitions afford teams of health professional students an experiential opportunity to apply knowledge and skills about teamwork acquired through didactic IPE experiences, as a co-curricular (i.e., experiences outside formal curricula)…
BackgroundDue to the COVID-19 pandemic, health professional programs revolved quickly to virtually deliver sound pedagogy for students’ learning and clinical practice. Simultaneously, many healthcare institutions shifted from in person care to the practice of telehealth without prior training of providers. To address the need for clinical education in the delivery of interprofessional telehealth patient centered care, the Michigan Area Health Education Center leadership developed an…
Dental medicine students often rate Interprofessional (IP) educational experiences as a lower priority for their curriculum than peers in other health professions. This may be due to the lack of exposure to other professions in standard dental medicine curricula. This study investigates trends in perceived interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) skills among third-year dental medicine students participating in two exposure level experiences with students from other professions across…
Background: Our client population is becoming increasingly diverse. Cultural competence is an important skill set for health care providers to serve this diverse client population, improve healthcare outcomes and engage in collaborative work with colleagues. Interprofessional education (IPE) activities for healthcare students provide a vehicle to develop and enhance cultural competence. In this study, we sought to investigate the effect of university-wide interprofessional activities on…
The University of Texas Southwestern School of Health Professions successfully transitioned a year-long, active and in person, interprofessional development course to an online format during the pandemic. A holistic model incorporated online pedagogy, educational technology, and innovative solutions to maintain the active learning in the course. Assessments measured outcomes and student evaluations contributed to formative feedback and summative review of the activities. The new online…
Our academic health center delivers a 3-phase (exposure, immersion, competence) interprofessional education (IPE) curriculum that is a graduation requirement. On March 13th, 2020 onsite classes were suspended due to the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the state. Faculty rapidly implemented alternative methods of instruction to complete coursework for the spring semester. Many classes were hosted on a virtual platform using Zoom. During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare students and…
Background/Aims Interprofessional education (IPE) can have a significant impact on learner attitudes and ultimately improve clinical outcomes. The recent pandemic has likely negatively impacted our ability to teach IPE content. At our institution we converted our in-person IPE program to remote which incorporated on-line educational modules with small group sessions. While attitudes towards teamwork likely take years of education and experience, we had some initial evidence that our in…
