Objectives:

By the end of today's seminar, the learner will be able to:

  • Construct a virtual IPE event using the same learning objectives as a face to face event
  • Describe how to prepare facilitators with training to use zoom and interactive online skills
  • Compare and contrast the assessment of the event in the virtual and face to face formats

While the pandemic taught us many things, it provided a need to deliver interprofessional education content in a virtual platform. For our Foundations of interprofessional collaboration program (FIPC), it required the pivot of 3 large scale events (600+ students) to a Zoom platform. In this session, we will discus the construction of a virtual IPE event using the same objectives as the face to face event for all three events. We will demonstrate the virtual tools and options that we used to convert Pictionary, teambuilding activities, and simulation into a Zoom platform with minimal tech support. We will describe how we prepared our facilitators to use the platform and facilitate in an online learning environment addressing faculty guides and technology fears. And finally, we will compare and contrast the student and faculty assessment of the event as we have delivered it in the past (face to face) versus the new virtual format. This session will be interactive using audience guided polls, zoom functions such as breakout rooms and whiteboard/annotation, and small group discussions.

I. Construct a virtual IPE event using the same learning objectives as a face to face event

  1. Polling -
    • how many did it? How many of you pivoted?
    • How many did it well?
    • How many were able to do assess?
    • Of those who were able to assess their event, how many were able to compare to previous face to face version?
  2. Where to start
    • Assessed the tools we had available
      • Zoom functionality
        • Breakout rooms
        • Whiteboards
        • Annotation
        • Video sharing/screen sharing
      • Blackboard Ultra Collaborate
        • Similar functions to Zoom
        • More Cons: Connectivity issues, maneuverability
      • Microsoft Teams
      • Skype
    • Examined our current objectives
    • Converted activities to virtual activities
      • Finding suitable "replacements" as needed
      • Inserting new activities when replacements were not possible (Tangram)
  3. Activities to try - IPE level 1
    • Whiteboard - Pictionary
    • Tangram - teambuilding
    • Breakout rooms?

II. Describe how to prepare facilitators with training to use zoom and interactive online skills

  1. Learning the tools ourselves
    • Developing a Zoom training guide
  2. Conquering the fears of technology (super Zoom users with Fabulous Facilitators)

III. Compare and contrast the assessment of the event in the virtual and face to face formats

  1. Implement the event (Logistics)
    • Timetables
    • Creating the accounts
    • Zoom links/password (no Zoom bombing but lost students)
    • Connection issues
  2. Evaluating the event
    • Using the same surveys for an in-person event
  3. Survey Says
    • What our data shows…
