The COVID-19 pandemic forced health professional schools to develop virtual educational opportunities in clinical care. We transitioned our already established Interprofessional Educational Clinic to allow an interprofessional team of students to virtually provide care to emergency department (ED) patients. The telehealth ED experience occurred from Sept 2020 – March 2021. ED faculty physicians were physically present with the patients and an interprofessional team of 2-3 students joined the clinical experience virtually. The sessions were 2.5 hours with a goal to provide care to 2 ED patients with dedicated time for education and debriefing. The student interprofessional team was structured to include a junior learner who was a first year medical student (MS1), paired with a senior student. The senior students were a mix of 3rd and 4th year medical students (MS3, MS4), second year physician assistant students (PA) and nurse practitioner students (NP). A total of 60 students participated in this experience. The students completed an electronic survey using a 5 point Likert scale to address several domains, including: 1) the learners’ ability to actively participate in delivery of care, 2) teamwork in the telehealth model, 3) history taking, 4) physical exam, and 5) medical decision making. A survey response of 52% was achieved (n=31). The majority of students felt they were able to actively participate in patient care with 81% strongly agreeing and 13% somewhat agreeing. Overwhelmingly, 97% of students felt that the team worked well together in this hybrid virtual model. Additionally, most students strongly agreed that they were able to participate in obtaining history (87%) and physical exam (96%) as well as developing an assessment and plan (90%).
In support of improving patient care, this activity is planned and implemented by The National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education Office of Interprofessional Continuing Professional Development (OICPD). The OICPD is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
As a Jointly Accredited Provider, the OICPD is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.
