Bridgett Piernik-Yoder, PhD, OTR, FAOTA, is an occupational therapist with expertise working with older adults and those with neuromuscular dysfunction. Dr. Piernik-Yoder‘s scholarly interests include environmental safety assessment and risk reduction for older adults, professional development and mentoring, and the scholarship of teaching and learning and interprofessional education in health science education. Effective communication with patients and other health professionals is paramount. Unfortunately, today’s students remain under-trained in health literacy communication. The importance of health literacy, combined with increasing accreditation expectations for interprofessional communication, affords a rich opportunity for interprofessional education (IPE).
