Cathy Poon, BS, PharmD, FPPA, FCPP, is an endowed full professor, Department Chair of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration and Associate Dean of Interprofessional Education at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences. Although Cathy’s formalized training is in pediatric pharmacy practice, she transformed her passion for collaborative patient care experiences while on a pediatric team, to now devoting majority of her time serving as a mentor for all levels of learners/educators, with an emphasis on interprofessional education and practice. Under Cathy’s leadership, her team has received several interprofessional education grants and received the 2020 USPHS IPEC Award and 2020 AACP Excellence in Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Award.

The majority of health outcomes are due to factors such as housing, income, poverty, and racism, referred to as social determinants of health (SDOH). Virtual interprofessional education (V-IPE) student experiences are time-constrained, with most focusing on objective criteria and evidence-based practice (known as an “etic” approach), while not teaching an “emic,” patient-centered approach of understanding health issues from the patient’s perspective.
