Elizabeth Fletcher, DNP, APN Director of Interprofessional Education, Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine Cooper Medical School of Rowan University is a Nurse Practitioner (NP) with the Cooper University Hospital Infectious Diseases Division providing HIV and Hepatitis care of adults. Other responsibilities include program coordinator Transitional Care Coordination Program of HIV patients in the Camden County Jail, primary provider of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and the Post Exposure follow up of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) victims and program coordinator of the CUHS Subcontract with New Jersey Correctional Medical Services to treat HIV & Hepatitis C infected inmates in NJ State prisons.

The majority of health outcomes are due to factors such as housing, income, poverty, and racism, referred to as social determinants of health (SDOH). Virtual interprofessional education (V-IPE) student experiences are time-constrained, with most focusing on objective criteria and evidence-based practice (known as an “etic” approach), while not teaching an “emic,” patient-centered approach of understanding health issues from the patient’s perspective. Many independent institutions with limited healthcare programs and those not affiliated with a medical center are often challenged with meeting IPE accreditation requirements. The pandemic provided a challenge as well as an opportunity for collaboration with Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences, to create a virtual interprofessional experience for learners at various levels of education.
