Elizabeth Matteo is a registered dietitian who completed her nutrition education and training at Boston University. She works at the Sargent Choice Nutrition Center which provides nutrition services to Boston University students, faculty/staff, and members of the community. She leads an interprofessional program for Boston University dietetic interns and medical students to foster a greater understanding of each discipline’s role on the healthcare team. For the past four years, Elizabeth has been a part of the Boston University Community Health Alliance of Medical Professionals (BU CHAMPS) serving as a nutrition preceptor in an interprofessional learning environment.

Societal focus on personal responsibility for obesity has been shown to contribute to negative attitudes about people with obesity among healthcare providers and internalized weight bias among patients. Consequences of weight stigma include social isolation, stress, negative health behaviors and less frequent medical care. An interprofessional approach is needed to address the complexity of obesity in a way that decreases stigma and promotes physical and emotional wellbeing.
