Heather Miselis, MD, MPH, FAAFP, is a board-certified family physician and Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center. She is a medical educator at the undergraduate and graduate levels and provides clinical care in the inpatient setting as well as in the Boston community. She is an education leader for IPE at Boston University School of Medicine and Principal Investigator of Boston University Community Health Alliance of Medical Professionals (BU CHAMPs). Heather has worked with others to develop an interprofessional practice and education model in the primary care environment that addresses the quadruple aim. Her mixed-methods research evaluates the impact of interprofessional practice and education on health professional trainees and providers as well as patient and healthcare outcomes. Heather is a member of the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative and Co-chair of their Student Engagement Workgroup.

Societal focus on personal responsibility for obesity has been shown to contribute to negative attitudes about people with obesity among healthcare providers and internalized weight bias among patients. Consequences of weight stigma include social isolation, stress, negative health behaviors and less frequent medical care. To effectively support and optimize interprofessional practice and education, interprofessional faculty and clinical providers need to be purposeful in both the design of the curriculum and clinical learning environment. Design should be longitudinal, rooted in IPEC competencies, inclusive to all disciplines participating and centered on the needs of those served in the clinical environment.
