Dr. Southerland is Vice President of Interprofessional Education, Institutional Effectiveness, and the Health Education Center, a Professor in the Department of Nutrition Metabolism, and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she also received her DDS in 1989, did a two-year General Practice Residency Program, a fellowship, a MPH, and completed a PhD in Oral Biology. Dr. Southerland is a clinical, practitioner, researcher, and mentor to faculty and students. Dr. Southerland currently focuses on creating an educational environment that embraces interprofessioanl education and practice throughout the time of student matriculation. Currently, Her focus is on developing and implementing a Interprofessional Education Core Curriculum across all disciplines.

Digital badging allows students and faculty to showcase their interprofessional skills on social media, CVs, and professional networks. These electronic symbols are micro-credentials to document IPEP achievement and mastered skills. The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) initiated interprofessional digital badges to promote, reward, and track interprofessional involvement. The University of Texas Medical Branch has worked to integrate interprofessional education into our curricula across health professions student early learners. Through our strategic planning process , we identified the approach called T.E.A.M.S.
