Katie Toon, MOT, OTR, CLT, is an academic fieldwork coordinator and assistant professor at St. Catherine University’s OTA program. She is passionate about equipping students and fieldwork educators for success and growth. Katie’s scholarship interests include emotional intelligence and its relationship to successful fieldwork completion, mentoring in the OT community, as well as the use of simulation in OT Education.

In preparation to become a healthcare professional, clinical experiences are one of the most crucial aspects of translating didactic coursework into clinical practice (Brown et al., 2016). It is recognized that students with integrated emotional intelligence (EI) are identified as performing higher at providing individualized, meaningful, and culturally sensitive care (Mckenna and Mellson, 2013).
