Kayce Ward is the Forensic Nurse Manager for Tex-TRAC at Texas A&M Health’s College of Nursing and manages a team of Forensic Nursing experts to provide TeleSANE consultations to clinicians. Prior to joining Texas A&M, she worked as a SANE and then as program coordinator at Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant in San Antonio, TX, and conducted over 1700 sexual assault forensic exams on both adolescent/adult survivors and suspects of all ages, providing coverage to more than 25 counties in South Texas while collaborating with community partners to ensure all forensic patients received holistic care and support.

Texas has a large population, large geographical area (268,597), and many rural and medically underserved regions. Many Texas rural and underserved communities lack access to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) and medical forensic exams (MFEs). MFEs conducted by SANEs decrease risk of adverse mental health consequences to victims by providing high quality, patient-centered, and trauma-informed care [1,2]. Exams conducted by SANEs result in more effective evidence collection, greater admissibility of evidence in court, and greater likelihood cases proceed through the justice system [3-8].…
