Rebecca Bryan is the Director of Community Engagement and Professional Development at Rutgers University School of Nursing-Camden. An expert primary care nurse practitioner with 20 years of clinical practice, her passion now is educating interprofessional healthcare providers about trauma-informed care. Having worked with Camden residents for 14 years, Rebecca recognizes the profound impact social determinants of health have on health outcomes. Her affiliations with city organizations enable nursing students to access community clinical experiences. Rebecca is certified in trauma-informed care through Lakeside Global Institute and has written three articles on the impact of adverse childhood experiences on adult health.

The majority of health outcomes are due to factors such as housing, income, poverty, and racism, referred to as social determinants of health (SDOH). Virtual interprofessional education (V-IPE) student experiences are time-constrained, with most focusing on objective criteria and evidence-based practice (known as an “etic” approach), while not teaching an “emic,” patient-centered approach of understanding health issues from the patient’s perspective. Interprofessional education is required by many healthcare professional program accreditation standards. Many independent institutions with limited healthcare programs and those not affiliated with a medical center are often challenged with meeting IPE accreditation requirements. Some of the challenges encountered developing and planning interprofessional experiences include identifying collaborators, determining the healthcare professions and level of studies, agreeing on common learning outcomes and logistics such as date, space, learning management systems.

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University has historically collaborated with Rutgers University Schools of Social Work, Nursing and Law to provide interprofessional education. The pandemic provided a challenge as well as an opportunity for collaboration with Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, University of the Sciences, to create a virtual interprofessional experience for learners at various levels of education. This experience was developed to introduce interprofessional education (IPE) concepts early in healthcare education.
