The four-year interprofessional education (IPE) curriculum at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) Health Professions programs for the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy will be described. Our innovative curriculum incorporates case- and team-based learning, simulation and includes over 500 learners each year from eight professional programs. Students are assigned to interprofessional teams at the beginning of the curriculum and remain on this team for subsequent activities. All teams include two BSN, DDS, MD and PharmD students and smaller numbers of PA, DH, Graduate Social Work and Master of Science in Anesthesia students.
For the first event, the content is focused on patient safety and the collaborative experience utilizes case and team-based learning approaches to solve problems. Students convene in-person to get to know one another and their interprofessional roles and responsibilities. The content for the second event is online and focused on the Dr. Hotspot high utilizers video and ethics and values in healthcare. Students work with team members to complete an assignment exploring social determinants of health and establish a list of resources addressing food insecurity, houselessness, prescription assistance, transportation, and utility assistance. Teams also use the resource list to manage an online patient with unique social needs and access to care issues.
Within two months of the second event, students complete the Missouri Community Action Poverty Simulation as interprofessional families and then are called to action to complete at least one service activity in Kansas City together. The final experience for students in schools of medicine and pharmacy is to partner in an online, telehealth simulation case. This four-year curriculum is a model example that incorporates online, virtual, simulation, and technology facilitated interprofessional learning. Our curriculum is well-rated and student evaluations for all UMKC Health Professions schools are exceptional.
