Alexa Valentino, PharmD, BCACP, TTS is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Interprofessional Education Lead at OSUCOP and Clinical Pharmacist at PrimaryOne Health. Dr. Valentino completed her PharmD at Duquesne University and two years of residency in Ambulatory Care at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy (OSUCOP). Her experience providing interprofessional team-based care for underserved patients drove her passion for preparing students to do the same through interprofessional education. For her work in these areas, Dr. Valentino has been awarded grant funding, presented at state and national meetings, and published in peer-reviewed journals. As the new Director of Buck-IPE Curriculum in the office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Interprofessional Practice and Education, Dr. Valentino is driving the development of the university-wide IPE Curriculum at Ohio State and faculty and preceptor development initiatives.
Presenting at the Nexus Summit:
An interprofessional team of faculty, staff and students created a longitudinal exercise entitled, “Personal and Collective Responsibility for Health Equity: Anti-Racism in Action” involving second year learners from seven Ohio State health sciences colleges. Learning objectives included the following: three IPEC sub-competencies (Values and Ethics, Interprofessional Communication, and Roles and Responsibilities) and two objectives differentiating types of racism and identifying impacts of racism on wellbeing and health care delivery. We are all working hard, both individually and collectively, to improve interprofessional practice and education. However, despite best efforts, progress is slow, and outcomes remain variable. Collaborative scholarship provides opportunities to widen access to a greater number of techniques used for research and more efficient learning, brings more experience to bear upon a problem/issue, and promotes creativity and effective problem-solving.
