David W. Coon, Ph.D., is Associate Dean for Research Initiatives, Support, & Engagement and Director of the Center for Innovation in Healthy & Resilient Aging, Edson College of Nursing & Health Innovation at Arizona State University. A fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, Dr. Coon designs and evaluates interdisciplinary skill-building interventions that focus on diverse groups of midlife and older adults facing chronic illnesses (e.g., dementia, cancer, depression) and their family caregivers. Several of these empirically based treatments have been recognized by the American Psychological Association, the US Administration for Community Living, the Rosalynn Carter Institute, and other entities.

Numerous organizations, like NCICLE and ACGME, have advanced our understanding and recognition of optimal interprofessional clinical learning environments (CLEs). To date, however, there are few guides for operationalizing essential elements of CLEs in real-world practices. Since the advent of the HITECH Act (2009), there has been exponential growth of the electronic health record (EHR). While advances in clinical decision support and limited interoperability have been made, limitations in EHR functionality still exist for clinicians. This is particularly evident for healthcare teams. EHR platforms were designed for individual end-users and lack functionality for active teaming in the clinical arena.
