The American Interprofessional Health Collaborative Student Engagement Committee is the host for the Nexus Summit Student-Led and Engaged Track that features a variety of sessions showcasing the role of students in interprofessional activities, courses and experiential learning in community and practice settings.  The track lightning talks and posters will allow students, faculty and health professions preceptors to discover many strategies to incorporate student-led and engaged interprofessional activities in their own settings.

 

Learning Objectives

By participating in the Student-Led and Engaged Track, you will be able to:

  1. Identify interprofessional research, interprofessional practice and interprofessional community work being done by students at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  2. Describe strategies to engage diverse groups of students and faculty in curriculum re-design and implementation.
  3. Discuss examples of current academic-community practice partnerships and how they have worked to bridge needs in interprofessional education and practice. 
  4. Articulate how lessons learned can be adapted to your own IPE programs in your own educational or practice environment.
  5. Discuss opportunities to immediately engage students in clinical development at your institution.   

 

Reflective Questions for the Student-Led and Engaged Track

  1. How can students use their collective voice to engage institutional stakeholders in IPE?
  2. What is the role of faculty or clinician modeling or observer feedback for interprofessional learning and practice? 
  3. What elements of interprofessional learning experiences may be generalized to professions that have not participated in a team-based practice context?
  4. What are ways that interprofessional student clinical experiences can be value added?
  5. How might interprofessional programs and partnership be designed longitudinally throughout the clinical aspect of professional education?
  6. What are the biggest barriers to interprofessional teamwork and how might we design experiences to address these barriers?
  7. How can student-led committees, activities and events be sustained with yearly                turnover of students as they progress through their training? 
  8. How can we remove co-location restrictions and engage rural learners in IPE activities? 
  9. How can use of a co-design model impact faculty/student communication and collaboration?
  10. How can interprofessional case competitions empower emerging healthcare professionals with collaborative and ethical tools for generating innovative healthcare solutions?
  11. What did you like about the Nexus Summit and why?
  12. What are some areas of improvement regarding the Nexus Summit?

 

Preparing for the Summit Student Led and Engaged Track

  1. Student Welcome and Orientation to Nexus Session. Tuesday, September 14 from 9:00-9:30 am CDT via Zoom. Facilitated by Heather Miselis
  2. Student Lightning Talks. Review presentations then attend discussion, question and answer sessions.  
  • October 5 12:00-1:00 pm CDT- Student-Led and Engaged COVID-19 Vaccination Response Initiatives, facilitated by: Teresa Cochran and Maura Nitka.
  • October 5 12:00-1:00 pm CDT- Student-led and Engaged Interprofessional Practice and Education, facilitated by: Mary Claire Potter and Erica Chou.
  • October 5 1:15-2:15 pm CDT- Student-led and Engaged Interprofessional Practice and Education, facilitated by: Nikki Barrington and Diane Bridges.
  • October 5   2:30-3:30 pm  CDT- Student-led and Engaged Interprofessional Practice and Education, facilitated by: Kyle Warkentin and Heather Miselis.

  1. Virtual Student Poster Presentations.
  2. Award Ceremony. AIHC Student Award for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice and Outstanding Student Poster Award. The Award ceremony is during the October 7 plenary of Nexus Summit 2021.
