The International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Standards of Best Practice in Simulation (2016) are foundational to optimize innovative interprofessional (IPE) simulation-based learning. These are often perceived to be nursing focused in application and have not been more broadly disseminated across various healthcare professional disciplines.
The St. Catherine University Henrietta Schmoll School of Health (HSSH) represents 28 Nursing and Health Science Programs with a focus on innovative interprofessional learning. Simulation-based learning is a method to support the learning and understanding of interprofessional collaboration of patient care management. Doctoral of physical therapy students and nursing students participated in an IPE simulation activity focused on the team management of cardiac situations. Student evaluations of the initial facilitation of this activity led to a revision and integration of the INACSL Standards of Best Practice for the next experience. The integration of the INACSL Standards led to allowing more time and reformatting the activity to align with and support best practices for prebrief, facilitation, and debrief with the goal to optimize the IPE learning outcomes. The evaluations demonstrated an overwhelming improvement of the student’s experience and valuing of each healthcare professional scope of practice and how working together can optimize the management of a patient’s care and experience. Presenters will discuss the changes made to this IPE-Sim activity and share a comparison of the student evaluations.
