It is a bold vision to consider how to redesign healthcare to meet the changing needs of society, including increasingly complex care that is influenced by social determinants of health, health equity and systemic racism. Yet, courageous leaders across healthcare are doing just that – exploring how to adjust the direction and trajectory of their professions to move forward in meaningful ways to deliver high quality primary care to every American.

During this plenary, Warren Newton, MD, MPH, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Board of Family Medicine, will present a case study of a national initiative to re-envision family medicine residency education. Working closely with the ACGME, the American Board of Family Medicine has collaborated with the clinical and academic organizations in the specialty to develop a new vision of family medicine residency education. Over 3,500 people and 9 organizations participated in the process. Starting with the urgent needs of society at this time of decreasing life expectancy, failure to make progress on the quadruple aim and shameful disparities, he will describe the process so far and the lessons for us all in driving change at the nexus of public need, accreditation of educational institutions and clinical education at the national level.

Following Dr. Newton’s comments, leaders in the Nexus of interprofessional practice and education taking bold steps toward redesign will reflect on their own experiences working toward practice change and share their ideas about what it takes to move redesign forward.
