DescriptionA vital component of delivering collaborative interprofessional care is understanding each profession's roles and expertise. A total of 119 students from physical therapy, pharmacy, and nursing programs participated in a 3-day hybrid interprofessional (IPE) event, where students virtually trained each other to screen community members in-person for osteoporosis/fall risk. The value of this IPE was it advanced the educational experience beyond traditional learning by allowing students to apply knowledge and engage in real-life client situations. Thus, the virtual nature of this IPE event was made immersive despite COVID-19 restrictions mandated by a global health crisis. Prior to the first virtual meeting, students and facilitators completed a training module about osteoporosis/fall risk.

  • Day 1, students attended an overview lecture and breakout sessions where they trained each other on topics related to their discipline.
  • Day 2, each student performed a comprehensive in-person osteoporosis/fall screening on a community person.
  • Day 3, students were divided into 22 interprofessional groups facilitated by a faculty member, community practitioner, or alumni to discuss the client's results and SMART goal.

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) Risk Test indicated that of the 119 community members screened (Mean age = 55 years), 70 (67%) participants had ≥1 clinically proven risk factor and 13 (11%) participants had ≥4 risk factors. Based on a battery of tests, 29 (24%) participants were identified as having a fall risk. At-risk participants were identified and encouraged to seek medical attention. The transition to a virtual educational and home-based screening environment enabled many more students to participate and increased the number of people screened compared to previous in-person IPE events. All students reported improved knowledge of osteoporosis screening/risk factors and increased valuation of interprofessional collaboration in patient care.
