Aloha Balza is the Coordinator for the Office of Community Engagement and the Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice at Florida Atlantic University. She is charged with developing strategies related to the institution’s community engaged programs. She also works collaboratively to create and implement interprofessional programming for medical, nursing and social work students. Her responsibilities include collecting and reporting CE and IPE&P assessment data. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from New York University and her Master of Public Administration degree from Florida Atlantic University. She is currently a PhD candidate in the School for Public Administration at FAU.

Presenting at the Nexus Summit:

Two cases were developed based on lived experiences from a multicultural interprofessional faculty team. Students were assigned prereading on microaggressions, use of race correction in clinical algorithms, and racial bias in clinical measures. In a large group session, guidelines for respectful discussion were established. Next, 52 medical students and 88 nursing students were placed in mixed small groups in breakout rooms. This academic year, Florida Atlantic University’s Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice, with their Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and School of Social Work, and Palm Beach Atlantic University’s School of Pharmacy successfully launched interprofessional videoconferencing sessions with local older adult mentors in a program to promote healthy aging. This program is unique in that it allows the assigned older adult mentor, called a Senior Aging Geriatric Educator (SAGE), to educate each team of students about healthy aging through the lens of interprofessional collaboration.
