Two cases were developed based on lived experiences from a multicultural interprofessional faculty team. Students were assigned prereading on microaggressions, use of race correction in clinical algorithms, and racial bias in clinical measures. In a large group session, guidelines for respectful discussion were established. Next, 52 medical students and 88 nursing students were placed in mixed small groups in breakout rooms. The first case centered on microaggressions impacting a patient and a member of the interprofessional team. The second case explored inappropriate clinical management using race based clinical algorithms and implicit bias. Students discussed the cases using guiding questions and were asked to share similar experiences they have encountered in which a patient’s race or ethnicity negatively impacted their outcomes. After each case, the group came together for large group reflection and received formal instruction on microaggressions and communication strategies for use in clinical environments. It was hoped that reflection and dialogue would lead to professional growth and the development of language that can be used when encountering overt bias and/or microaggression or misinformation in clinical rotations. Insight gained from this activity will prepare students to recognize that race based clinical measures can be flawed and lead to negative patient outcomes. Students were encouraged to take this knowledge into practice settings and be role models and allies so that interprofessional teams can collaboratively improve health equity.
