This academic year, Florida Atlantic University’s Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice, with their Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and School of Social Work, and Palm Beach Atlantic University’s School of Pharmacy successfully launched interprofessional videoconferencing sessions with local older adult mentors in a program to promote healthy aging. This program is unique in that it allows the assigned older adult mentor, called a Senior Aging Geriatric Educator (SAGE), to educate each team of students about healthy aging through the lens of interprofessional collaboration. Prior to attending the SAGE visits, students from the various disciplines asynchronously learn the core competencies of interprofessional education through longitudinal online modules which prepare them to collaborate in interprofessional teams during these visits. This year, we utilized the online ZoomTM platform to facilitate interactions via breakout rooms and introduced students to telehealth from an interprofessional perspective. Students meaningfully engaged with their older adult mentor, conducted initial geriatric screenings, background assessments, reviewed medications, and performed risk assessments through a collaborative team approach. Students also integrated Script Your Future (SYF) Team ChallengeTM to improve medication adherence and COVID-19 vaccine confidence. Mentors were previously mailed a SYF medication adherence flyer, a medication list wallet card and student-created COVID-19 vaccine information pamphlets. According to the post-SYF survey, more than half of the 58 mentors stated they felt more likely to take their medications on time and as prescribed and 67% of the mentors felt more educated after this event. At the completion of the program, over 80% of students surveyed “strongly agree”/ “agree” that the online Zoom platform was conducive to their learning in applying collaborative competencies and helped them develop interprofessional relationships. This lightening talk will include a discussion on the challenges and opportunities in engaging interprofessional learners online with a focus on professionalism, boundaries, and body language.
