During the 2020-2021 academic year, we offered a new interprofessional course, “Emergency Response Management”. The course was extremely popular: 160 students enrolled in the Fall and 100 in the Spring. As facilitators for the course, we developed numerous group activities that appeared to be relevant and what we hoped would be interesting, motivating, and fun. While students’ on-going evaluations of the activities were positive, it was concerning that the final evaluations highlighted students’ dislike for group work, as well as a considerable reluctance to initiate communication with professionals unfamiliar to them – two skills critical for their future professional success. At the same time the course evaluations were being analyzed, the results from the institution’s student satisfaction survey were published. One item on this survey indicated a significant percentage of students did not feel like the institution promoted a culture of innovation and that students were not encourage to innovate in their classes. Based on the course evaluations and the students’ satisfaction scores, we wanted to give students an opportunity to participate in using innovative thinking to solve the problems identified with the course. Following a call for volunteers, we have 21 student partners, all bringing realistic expectations, creative solutions and credibility to the course; this partnership is the best investment we could have made.Strategies for how we have garnered and analyzed students’ ideas, made decisions and redesigned the course will be discussed.
