The purpose of this lightning talk is to discuss the need for academic-practice partnerships that support the education, training, and development of students, faculty, and healthcare workers in interprofessional education and practice (IPEP) opportunities. Presenters will discuss the collaborative vision among Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative (AIHC), and the National Association for Interprofessional Health Mentorship, Education, and Service (NAIHMES), describing the value in forming a nationwide partnership among students, faculty, and health care workers to bridge academic and practice needs in IPEP. In addition to this vision, presenters will share the Carolina Student Services Corps model that was developed by the NC AHEC Program and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which can serve as an exemplar of value and highlight potential opportunities that could be replicated both state- and nation-wide.In March 2021, the NC AHEC Program and NAIHMES (originating as a collaboration with the COVID response organization known as the National Student Response Network, NSRN) began partnership discussions to pilot a chapter model of an interprofessional student services corps using the NC Interprofessional Education Leaders Collaborative (NC IPELC) to connect NAIHMES student volunteers in NC health professions programs with NC IPELC faculty in NC health professions schools. Learning from the student volunteer models developed by the NC AHEC Program and NSRN in the COVID pandemic response, a national vision was formed. With the support of the AIHC, this vision includes the collaboration between 3 national organizations, with delineated roles for 1) student leadership, experiences, and training (NAIHMES); 2) faculty development, mentorship, and scholarship (AIHC); and 3) the intentional connection between students, faculty, and practice settings (AHEC). We hope to demonstrate that this inter-organizational collaboration can be disseminated broadly as a model to support community-based interprofessional opportunities for students.
